Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuild

Restore the power and efficiency of your industrial hydraulic cylinders today with Yates Industries leading hydraulic cylinder rebuild services.

Manufacturing processes demand equipment that has been engineered to withstand heavy applications. A damaged cylinder costs time and money because it can hold back your entire production facility or completely halt your heavy equipment.

Whether you’re operating a single truck or a full line of industrial equipment, we follow the same proven process for any cylinder rebuild.

In addition to rebuilds we also offer replacement hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic cylinder repair.

Cylinder Rebuild Process

  • First, we receive your cylinder and completely disassemble it.
  • Once the cylinder is disassembled, we document and clean every component. This ensures we trace the source of any inefficient operation or failure. A thorough inspection can spot compromised O-rings, damaged tie rods, cracked housings or other issues.
  • Next, we reassemble your cylinder and run it through rigorous testing to ensure OEM or better results. If you need emergency repair services, our team operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Signs Your Cylinder Needs Attention

rebuilt hydraulic cylinderInspect your system periodically to look for any common signs that your cylinder needs service. Check for leaks throughout your lines or around the piston. Inspect the line pressure to see if your system is operating at the correct pressure. A sudden drop in pressure may be a sign of a pump issue or a leaking line.

A worn-out cylinder may not fail altogether, but it may have reduced performance levels. Inspect your cylinder and hydraulic system for signs of reduced power. Even if your system is still operational, a rebuild system can improve the efficiency of your production line and prevent a catastrophic failure.

How To Rebuild Your Cylinder

There are many different types of cylinders, but all require the same basic steps. Follow these steps, reviewing the specific features of each below, to thoroughly repair your hydraulic component:

  • Cleaning
  • Disassembly
  • Reassembly

Your cylinder operates in harsh work conditions, so be sure to thoroughly clean it before the disassembly process. Remove any caked-on dirt, grease, dust or oil that could compromise the internal components. You’re going to be opening up your cylinder and lubricating critical components, so you need a clean environment.

Repair a Wire Ring Cylinder

This type of cylinder has a wire ring instead of a threaded head. The basic process is the same, but it’s important to follow the correct hydraulic cylinder repair steps to avoid damaging the ring or head.

The Disassembly Process

Start the process by retracting the rod assembly and removing the external steel wire ring. You may need a mallet and punch to push the head into the tube and expose the internal tube groove.

Take the plastic removal ring from the cylinder seal replacement kit and insert it into the groove. Point the feathered end into the tube and be sure it’s fully within the groove. You should now be able to remove the head out of the tube. Take off the removal ring, piston, lock nut and head/gland before moving on to the reassembly step of the hydraulic cylinder rebuild process.

The Reassembly Process

Replace the piston if there are any signs of damage. You should replace any damaged seals or rings as part of the hydraulic cylinder rebuild process. Here are some common components that may need to be replaced:

  • Wear ring
  • Locknut
  • Wiper seal
  • U-cup rod seal
  • O-ring dual seal
  • Head/gland
  • Piston

Carefully document the removal process to avoid improper reassembly. There are many rings and seals to prevent leaks in the hydraulic system, and improper assembly can prevent the system from working or reduce its lifespan.

Repair a Threaded Head Cylinder

A threaded head hydraulic cylinder rebuild also includes cleaning, disassembly and reassembly steps. This type of cylinder can use a set screw or locking ring. Be sure you understand which type you have before you disassemble the cylinder.

Disassembly Steps

Loosen the locking ring or set screw before removing the end cap. Once the end cap is removed, the piston, rod and gland assemblies can be fully removed, inspected and discarded if damaged. Just like a wire ring cylinder, threaded head components need to be treated carefully and only handled in a clean environment to avoid contamination.

Reassembly Steps

Clean components, re-apply lubricant and replace any damaged seals or rings. Carefully insert the piston and gland in the cylinder body before replacing the end cap. Secure the end cap with a lock nut or by torquing the set screw with the appropriate force.

Cylinder Disassembly Best Practices

A major part of the hydraulic cylinder rebuild process is a thorough inspection during disassembly. Look for these signs that a part needs to be repaired or replaced:

  • Scratched rod surface
  • Bent rod
  • Eroded piston seal
  • Misshapen or missing seal
  • Distorted rod seal
  • Worn-out guide bushing
  • Leaking hydraulic fluid

One of the most common issues with a hydraulic cylinder is a compromised seal, but there are a number of wear issues that can reduce efficiency and require a rebuild. Be sure to replace components with highly rated parts from a leading cylinder manufacturer.
